Love / Hate

We here @ The Wonderful World Of Miss TLC......

LOVE how the legendary dessert spot Serendipity publicized their $25,000 sundae JUST last week... and were shut down by the health department this week for disgusting infractions. I'm not sure ANYONE will be dropping $25, much less $25,000 there for a while...

HATE that Pop Tarts (and most other food aimed at children) feels the need to make breakfast into dessert. What happened to the plain blueberry ones w/o icing (those were my favorites)? I mean really, LOOK at these flavors currently in the supermarkets. S'mores??? Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough??? Oh, excuse me, the strawberry FROSTED ones (with sprinkles) are "low-fat". I took two pictures below...

LOVE the movie "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?". I know it's been in the theaters a while now, but I just got to see it last week, and it did NOT disappoint in the least. This movie makes you laugh, cry, get angry, and get happy all within two hours. Tyler Perry really did his thing with this one hitting the nail on the head when it comes to common problems in today's marriages. I definitely think this is his best film yet by far...

HATE that artists like Amy Winehouse are so brutally addicted to drugs and refuse to get help so that they could just get back to making some good ass music. I mean DOING COKE ON THE STAGE (see below)?!?!?! Oh brother. Her sloppiness has reached new heights. (PS - I love Amy's music and I know that the "tortured soul" sound sometimes comes from a drug-addicted existence, but she wasn't THIS messed up before. Maybe she was a heavy drinker, or smoking a lot of weed before when she recorded her brilliant debut album, Frank, but now she's a certified crack-head)...

LOVE the cover to Mary J. Blige's upcoming album, "Growing Pains". I'm not really interested in the album (I was a HUGE fan of her first 4 albums, and then kinda lost interest... around the same time she got happy and less hood. I miss my old Mary.) But anyway, I digress. This new cover is very nice, clean, slick, and grown. Which I guess is fitting, considering it's named "Growing Pains" ;) ...

HATE that Victoria's Secret (one of my favoritest places in the whole wide world) has decided to play themselves by charging $120 for a dress IDENTICAL to one I purchased at Forever 21 over the summer for... drumroll please... $30. I have perfected the art of mixing and matching REALLY expensive pieces with REALLY inexpensive pieces, so I have no qualms about buying things at Forever 21, and then turning right around and buying a boatload from Burberry. So even though it may seem nonsensical to some the amount of money I actually spend on shoes, I DO understand the value of a dollar, and that's why I felt TERRIBLE when I saw the dress below in the current holiday catalog, and I knew that I wore one just like it to one of my birthday parties this year (yes, I said ONE of). I've posted a pic of the VS dress below. I will take a pic of the Forever 21 one this weekend and add it...

......and we just thought you should know.

Congratulations Eddie!!!

Shout out to my good friend Eddie, who can now say that he's "modeled for Playboy alongside a Playmate". ;)

Eddie was asked to help model a new line of Playboy clothing for men this morning on the CW 11 Morning News. The line will be exclusively sold at Bloomingdale's, and May 2007 Playmate Shannon James appeared on the show to "reveal" the clothes to viewers ALL OVER (the tri-state area - lol).

Now y'all know how I feel about Playboy, so I was CLEARLY thrilled for him with this one. You did a good job darlin!

Jigga done did it and tied Elvis for the most #1 albums in his career (ten). Now he's only gotta beat The Beatles to REALLY be on top (they have nineteen though so that will take a while). That album is the business, so I'm actually surprised that it didn't even go gold first week out. Really people. It's up there as one of his best. He's DEFINITELY redeemed himself with me after that "Kingdom Come" garbage.

The rest of the chart's a pretty good mix. We got some country, some rock, some Disney, some reggaeton, some rap, some R&B, some opera, some adult contemporary, and some classics.

Britney's getting slack for dropping 70% in sales this week, but people, she's still in the top 10, and she's now sold 376K copies of her album. I wasn't even sure she'd sell 376 period, so that's actually really good.

However, I am SHOCKED by Chris Brown's poor sales performance. He's one of my lil boos, so I really wanted him to succeed. I really like the album too. But he only sold 294K. Hmm. To many other artists, that would be amazing, but for him, I expected closer to 400K. Hopefully there will be a build on that one.

And after 9 weeks, Kanye finally dropped out of the top 20. But don't worry about him (well in his personal life, you should, but his career is fine). "Graduation" has now sold over 1.6 million copies.

For those keeping count, "Curtis" has now sold almost 1.1 million copies.

Curb Your Enthusiasm's Leon

From BestWeekEver.tv...

Best Week Ever's take on this season of Curb Your Enthusiasm and the character Leon

While I totally agree with Best Week Ever in their praise of Leon & the last few minutes of the Curb Your Enthusiasm final episode, I don't agree that this season was just so-so. I thought this season was one of the best since the first couple seasons of the Larry David unscripted sitcom aired. Honestly, there were SO many moments where I was literally cracking up this time around. Larry was smart in recognizing a plotline that could go many places during the course of the season, while still keeping viewers amused with his awkward interactions (with the family he took in from the hurricane). They should seriously have a spin-off called "Larry & The Blacks". Him & Loretta would be a great couple.

Honestly, if you missed this season, go back and watch them all on HBO On Demand this weekend. You can thank me later.

Is Jacko Still Wacko To You (TWWOMT Poll & Contest)?

In the wake of Michael Jackson's recent Ebony magazine spread...

...he made a public appearance at Jesse Jackson's 66th birthday party last week.

Ok, so ever since he went into hiding after his child molestation trial, there have been rumors that Mike was staging a "comeback". DJ Whoo Kid supposedly spoke to him about collaborating and doing some G-Unit stuff last year, and there have also been reports that he's accepted tracks from all the production bigwigs including Timbaland, Kanye, and will.i.am. More recently there have been leaked tracks floating around the 'net, and I must say that I wasn't impressed with the ones I heard (except for one, "Bigger Man"), however, I couldn't picture them being produced by any of the aforementioned heavyhitters. So they could've been old unused album tracks, album filler, or even outtakes. Either way, I'm wondering what the general public really thinks.

Michael is obviously a legend. He is obviously talented. Personally, I'm a HUGE fan of his old stuff (Off The Wall style), but once he got into that power pop/cheesy rap/bangles and buckles, I lost him. More importantly, his last album Invincible tanked (even though I loved loved loved the sexy ballads "Break of Dawn", "Butterflies", and "Heaven Can Wait"). So are people REALLY interested in him coming back? Can he deliver a "hit" album with those "hitmakers" behind me? Will he sell?

I'm interested in all of your reponses, so here's the deal. I'm going to make this the new The Wonderful World of Miss TLC Poll AND there is a contest tie-in. First, choose a response under the new poll on the upper right panel of the site. Then, email me @ misstlcworld@yahoo.com and tell me a) what you voted, b) your thoughts on Michael (if you have any) which you will allow me to quote on the site (if I wish), and c) . I will choose a random winner on December 4th, who will receive a special TWWOMT Holiday package (including a CD, t-shirt, Starbucks gift certificate, and an extra beauty component).

Happy Birthday Mr. Big!

Mr. Big (well really Chris Noth) turns 53 today and to commemorate, we here at The Wonderful World of Miss TLC give you ... the love affair of Carrie & Mr. Big:

Cool Site: BookSwim

My Mom is one of the most in-touch-on-top-of-things-plugged-in and informed people out there. And I'm just SO lucky that she also happens to be my mother. ;)

So anyway, now that's she all cool and online, she sometimes stumbles upon sites that she tells me about, and I thought this one was interesting enough to pass along to my readers.

It's called BookSwim and basically, it's like Netflix for books. Now I don't know about you but I feel that there was a DEFINITE need for a service like this. There have been video rental services for years, but as far as books go, you only have the library. Now I'm not knocking the library, but I know that sometimes the hours aren't set up well enough for those who work late to get over there, browse, take books out, AND get a chance to bring them back. Then days become weeks, weeks become months, and before you know it, you owe the library 35 cents. LOL. I'm just joking. I actually know a lot of people who have forgotten to return books in the past few years, and ended up owing the price of the book. But if that's the case, then you feel like you might as well just buy it from a bookstore. However, you only read it once (usually), and regardless of whether or not you even enjoyed it, there's not much else to do with it at that point unless you want to lend it to a friend. So that's where BookSwim comes in. You pay them a subscription fee and you can "rent" books and mail them back easily over and over again.

Here's the official description from their site...

Book Rental Club

BookSwim is the first online book rental library club lending you paperbacks and hardcovers directly to your house without the need to purchase! Whether it's New Releases, Bestsellers, or Classics, we've got 150,000 titles to choose from, with free shipping both ways! Read your books as long as you want. -- no late fees! Even choose to purchase and keep the titles you love!

A Miss TLC Album Review: Alicia Keys "As I Am"

Alicia has already conquered the (semi) impossible before. Her debut album (Songs In A Minor)was so widely acclaimed (mainly due to the gargantuan single "Fallin") that many believed she couldn't do it again with her sophomore release, The Diary of Alicia Keys. But with monster hits like "If I Ain't Got You" and "You Don't Know My Name", it exploded bigger than the first.

Now four years have passed, and fans have been anxiously awaiting the songstress' new material for months. Today, As I Am, finally hits store shelves.

This album is pure 70s emotional soul, and I love it. Whether or not her fans will fall in love with it instantly though remains to be seen. See, the thing with Alicia is that she's always been able to successfully blend that old soul musical style with current hip-hop elements. This album doesn't really have any of that. Except for the iTunes bonus track ("Waiting For Your Love"), there are virtually no hip-hop samples and/or scratches. Personally I love the thicker, heavy instrumentation vibe. But it's definitely an "older" album. However, I think it can appeal to music fans from their teens through their 60s.

Alicia was definitely going through something while she was recording this album. Either that, or she is a REALLY good actress (and considering her turns in "Smoking Aces" and "The Nanny Diaries", I'm guessing it's the second). She is SANGING her heart out on every song. I mean, REALLY going for it. There are plenty of parts where she sounds like she is literally screaming at the person who hurt her while they are standing next to her in the recording booth. The emotion she can evoke in the listener on tracks like "Like You'll Never See Me Again" and "Go Ahead" is priceless. You can't help but bob your head and sing along to these gems. And now for my track by track breakdown...

  • 1. As I Am (Intro): Alicia's always got the strong piano intros. I think this is her best one yet.

  • 2. Go Ahead: This is one of my favorites on my album. Alicia delivers her message to the ex who ended up "disappointing" her as clear as could be. The staccato on the hook is perfect, and you can't help but act this one out when you are singing it.

  • 3. Superwoman: This song could've easily been released in 1972, and they wouldn't have had to change a thing. It's a perfectly constructed strong woman anthem.

  • 4. No One: The first single. Some people love it, some people hate it. I wasn't a fan originally, but it definitely fits right here in the track listing, so I like it more when listening to the whole album.

  • 5. Like You'll Never See Me Again: The second single. Pure Prince. Another one of my favorites. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he just gave her this song direct from his vault. There are parts that sound exactly like "Adore" and other minor moments that sound just like "Diamonds & Pearls". If you know how I feel about Prince, then you know how I feel about this song. It's gorgeous and perfect to put on with some dim lighting with candles blazing. :)

  • 6. Lesson Learned (featuring John Mayer): I would imagine this will be another single. Another one of my favorites. You can hear John all over it (I guess it helps that he actually sings back-up vocals too). This is one of the most honest visions about breaking up with someone you know wasn't good for you that I've ever heard someone verbally paint onto a track. The way the crescendo builds is dramatic and powerful and I can't wait to see her perform it live.

  • 7. Wreckless Love: MY FAVORITE SONG EVER RELEASED BY ANYONE EVER. Ok, I'm clearly exaggerating. But it's up there. This song is my life. LOL. I have been having this very discussion with people for years. Everyone needs that "wreckless love" in their life. Luckily, I've had it. But it's been a while... and now I'm reminiscing. Mmm mm mm. LOL. A real relationship should always feel that way, and Alicia carries that vibe right here.

  • 8. The Thing About Love: Another 70s sounding classic.

  • 9. Teenage Love Affair: Another one of my favorites. Not only does everyone need "wreckless love" in their life, but everyone needs to take a moment out of their busy lives to remember what it was like when they were teenagers passing notes and kissing on the corner and feeling those butterflies in your stomach every time your crush called you. This one has a very "You Don't Know My Name" kinda vibe.

  • 10. I Need You: This one has a nice percussive element, and I really like the melody as well.

  • At this point, the album kinda loses me. Still, that's exceptionally strong that I think the first 9 tracks are outstanding (and the 10th is really good). However, from this point on, everything is just kinda OK to me. I just think there is too much heavy slow stuff w/o anything else mixed in, and they all kinda sound the same. I may feel differently after a few more listens, but for right now, I wish she had mixed in something a little more lively within these final four tracks.

  • 11. Where Do We Go From Here: This is very old Motown to me. And once again, Alicia is truly singing her heart out.

  • 12. Prelude To A Kiss: This is only a two minute track (so it's more like an interlude), but honestly, it's a little too quiet and dull for me at this point in the album. She sings VERY strong on the "angel" part, but I preferred where she went at this point on her last album instead. I can listen to her jazzy "Feelin You, Feeling Me" interlude for an hour.

  • 13. Tell You Something (Nana's Reprise): Nah. Not really for me.

  • 14. Sure Looks Good To Me: If there's such a thing as rock-tinged R&B, then this is it. Her voice is very strong here.

  • 15. Waiting For Your Love (iTunes Bonus): This is the only beat-oriented-hip-hop-ish track on this record. I really like it, but I can see why it didn't get thrown onto the official track list.

And that's all folx. I would definitely recommend picking this one up.

    Terribly Traumatic: Donda West R.I.P.

In case you have not heard the shocking news yet, Kanye West's mother, Donda West, passed away on Saturday, at the very young age of 58. At this time, the family has asked for their privacy to be respected. The current story is that she passed away from complications during a cosmetic surgical procedure. Unfortunately for Kanye, he had just arrived in London when he got the news, and immediately flew back to L.A. For those who don't know, Kanye was EXTREMELY close with his mother, who worked as his manager, and released a book about raising him this past Mother's Day. Kanye even wrote a song about her entitled "Hey Mama" for his sophomore album Late Registration.

You can buy her book here.

And you can watch a very touching clip reflecting on Kanye's relationship with his mother (from MTV.com) below.

For another clip, and a more extensive article on the subject, go to MTV.com here.

UPDATE: (1) Kanye (I would imagine it was really his spokesperson) issued a statement which you can read here. (2) TMZ.com has been posting a ton of items today about the doctor who performed Donda's surgery, how he's been convicted of DUIs in the past, and how he's not even licensed by the board of plastic surgeons. (3) Interestingly enough, he's appeared on the Oprah show before. I really hope that Op didn't introduce the two. :( This is all so tragic, and I just know there will be investigations and lawsuits galore (and rightfully so). You can go to TMZ.com to read more about Dr. Adams.

    Major News For NYC Catholics

Pope Benedict XVI To Visit New York In April

    November 12, 2007

The Vatican's ambassador to the United States announced Monday morning that Pope Benedict XVI will be arriving in the U.S. on April 15th and is expected to spend time both in New York City and in Washington D.C.

Calling it a remarkable and historic occasion, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city will be honored to host the pope on the first visit by a pontiff since John Paul was in New York 12 years ago.

"We’re looking forward to what we know will be a remarkable and historic occasion for millions of the city's Catholics and New Yorkers of all faiths," said Bloomberg.

Details of the pope's visit were announced at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Baltimore.

On his first day in the city on Friday, April 18th, 2008, Benedict will address the United Nations as well as participate in an Ecumenical Service at a New York parish. Then on the 19th, he will celebrate a morning mass with priests, deacons, and members of religious orders in St. Patrick's Cathedral. That will be followed by a visit to Saint Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers where the Pope will participate in an event with young people.

The pope will spend his final full day in the city visiting the former World Trade Center site and by celebrating a public mass in Yankee Stadium. He will return to Rome on April 20.

"I have assured the Holy Father of a warm and prayerful welcome. We all look forward to his visit with pleasure and anticipation,” said Edward Cardinal Egan.

While it will be Benedict’s first visit to the city as pontiff, he has been to the city before. He visited in 1988, when he was Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, chief theologian for the Vatican. His will only be the city’s fourth papal visit. Pope Paul VI came to the city in 1965 and Pope John Paul II visited twice, in October 1979 and again in October 1995.

Benedict's visit will take place on the third anniversary of his election to succeed Pope John Paul II, who died in April 2005.

He's coming at a time of upheaval in the U.S. Catholic Church in the wake of sex abuse scandals and the continued drop in applications to the priesthood, and surveys indicating that many Catholics disagree with church doctrine.

A Helpful Tip From Miss TLC

Don't get on the train when you are THIS (see pic above) tired.

    Seriously.

All you end up doing is snoring loudly, resting your head on a stranger's shoulder, drooling on yourself, or falling off the seat like this here person did.

Want To Shop, Sight-see & Have Lunch @ The Same Time?

Well my parents put me onto Fairway in Red Hook, Brooklyn for all of the above. First off, it's a regular supermarket (which is part of a chain, so you may have been to the other ones on 74th or 125th in Manhattan or other parts of the country). But secondly, it's a food spot because there is a full sandwich spot/coffee bar/deli/pizzeria/etc. in the back serving hot food (which is actually really good) all day. And THEN, there is a special area right by the food where you can park your cart (full of groceries), and go sit on the back porch to eat while overlooking the view of the Statue of Liberty, the watertaxis, and an old Smithsonian-esque cable car. Seriously. So it's a nice lil spot to check out during a weekend afternoon if you needed to get your grocery shopping done anyway.

    Cute Shoes

These are an adorable pair that I wore on the last warm day of this year (which really wasn't that long ago). They are from Nine West, and I love the sailor element, and the vertical stripes on the inside of the shoe. I also like the fact that they are linen.

(Feel free to search for "Hot Shoes" and/or "Cute Shoes" in the search bar at the very top to browse through other past posted shoes.)

    My Take On Britney

The blog-o-sphere is full of pointless celeb-worshipping, celeb-trashing, and fan-fighting. The reason I started The Wonderful World of Miss TLC in the first place was because I was sick of all the ass-kissing and ass-praising; the fashion put-downs coming from out-of-shape ugly folx who have never been invited to an A-list party in their lives; the musical criticism coming from those who have no talent whatsoever; and the boatloads of un-educated and un-knowing pointless bullshit out there. I think it's a good thing that blogs have risen to the level of popularity that they have. There are plenty of "regular" people out there who can do the job better than those who are doing it in the mags and newspapers, but they haven't been hired by The New York Times, or Vogue, or Us Weekly. However, when their posting becomes excessively negative, and the person who is typing the vitriol into their web publishing tools night and day doesn't have a solution, or even an intelligent take on the story they are telling, then it's just adding static to our world. So I just try to give you the realness, as best I can. Don't get me wrong. I post a lot of opinionated pieces as well. But for the most part, I try to enlighten you all about the truth. I want to show you the facts, and make you think about entertainment news in an alternate way. Why? Well mainly because I've worked in this industry. I've hung out with these people. I've seen behind the velvet curtain, w/o just writing about it. You have to understand that reporters are usually only given access to a particular side of the business because that's all the artist/company/management wants them to see. Someone like me has been given a pass to see them in their backstage dressing rooms BEFORE the reporter arrives and they sit up straight and deliver their fake laugh. Someone like me has been in the meetings where deal points have been discussed BEFORE the standard press release is issued from the publicist which just happens to exaggerate the figures and monies awarded.

At the same time, I know what "sells", and I know what people want to read when they are stressed, or bored, or just have a couple of minutes to log onto the internet. This is why I balance my "serious" pieces, with random jokes, sarcastic comments, and nonsense as well. ;) Therefore, me posting something like "don't buy this album" as my Britney album review is actually one part joke/one part social commentary. I have listened to the album, and I don't think it's terrible. I have a very open mind when it comes to music. I've performed all over, received a scholarship for vocal performance in college, majored in music and business, and am a fan of rap, soul, jazz, blues, and reggae for the most part. And even though I don't personally choose to listen to pop, country, and/or rock, I can appreciate what's good, and what will usually be liked in that field. Production is key. Lyrics help. Marketing is big. I'll never make a statement like "hip-hop sucks" or "pop is for losers" or "jazz is boring". You can never generalize on an entire genre, and music is subjective (meaning I can find Frank Sinatra comforting, while someone else can get a headache just from hearing his lazy drawl, and neither of us is right or wrong).

The real reason I said that about "Blackout" was because Britney is clearly spinning out of control, and has been for quite some time now. It's sad, and it's a shame considering she has children, and nothing but a bunch of slug moochers around her who enable her to continue acting irresponsibly. Am I saying that we should only buy product from pristine crystal clean artists? No, I'm not. The main problem with her though is that she truly DOES NOT CARE about fans. She showed that clear as day on the MTV Awards. She didn't care what she put out there. She doesn't care to promote the new album, or show up to rehearsals, or listen to her record company's advice, etc. If you don't believe me, listen to her interview with Ryan Seacrest below:

    Extremely Bizarre Britney Interview

I have defended Britney in the past, but this is just too much. It's disrespectful quite frankly. Yes, I know she's under a lot of stress right now (with her kids, the legal trouble, and the paparazzi), but she did this to herself. It's not like she was some perfect-white-picket-fence-baking-chocolate-chip-cookies-on-a-Monday-afternoon-Mommy and the court system just swooped in and stole her kids from her and put her business on display. You can say Kevin caused this, but SHE chose to marry Kevin. You can say the paparazzi harrasses her, but SHE chooses to go out to Winston's every night drinking, making constant trips to the bathroom, and changing outfits in front of everyone. (Yes, I know it's possible she could just have bladder problems, but then why wouldn't you just stay home? Or at least take some medicine or something? According to the commercials I see on TV everyday, there are a lot of pills out there for incontinence.)

Bottom line, she just doesn't care. So we as a people should seriously show her that we don't care either. She literally IGNORED the interviewer on her ONE interview for her album! She handed the phone to someone NO ONE wants to talk to and jumped in the shower! She refused to even say "thanks for supporting me and buying the album" to her fans and instead had her stupid cousin do it?!?!?!?!? It's a slap in the face to all those who have made her a multi-millionaire. It's always bothered me when artists/actors/actresses say they "don't owe anything to anyone" after they are berated for treating their fans like dirt. Um... yes you do. If you didn't want fans, then you don't want money, so don't sign a million-dollar recording contract, or star in a blockbuster film. If you are just making music or acting "for the love of it", then by all means, stick to the karaoke bars and off-Broadway acting workshops. In other words, cut the bullshit. You want to be a star, so act like a star and appreciate your fans.

(Unfortunately, Britney will probably not learn from this experience at all since early industry reports have her album on track to sell around 400K copies this week and debut at #1 on the charts. Oh well, crazy continues to sell. :))
